Born in Guangzhou, China, Chen Yi transcends musical and cultural boundaries in her blending of Chinese and Western traditions. She currently serves as a Distinguished Professor of Composition at the University of Missouri - Kansas City Conservatory.
A strong advocate for new music, American composers, Asian composers, and women in music, Chen Yi has served on numerous advisory or educational boards. She has also made significant contributions to the field of music education in the United States and China.
Dr. Chen visited SUNY Fredonia as the Inaugural Sorel Visiting Artist in September 2022 and February 2023. Over 300 students and faculty met with her for rehearsals, master classes and concerts of her music.
