As we prepare for renovations, Reed Library is undertaking a thorough, multiphase review of the physical collections to ensure alignment with the evolving goals of our space and services and as part of our ongoing efforts to maintain relevant, accessible, and high-quality collections. Deselection, also known as weeding, is an essential part of collection development and maintenance that ensures our resources remain current, useful, and aligned with our users’ needs. All items removed will be done so following library policy.
In each review phase, we will focus on items that meet the specific criteria.
Deadline - May 9, 2025
Only titles published prior to 1995 have been identified for review, as they have a greater likelihood of containing outdated or less relevant information and have a higher chance of no longer meeting current user needs.
Only items acquired prior to 2015 were identified for review.
This process applies only to the general circulating collection, excluding items in the Music Collection, Juvenile Collection, and Special Collections & Archives, which have different preservation and use considerations.
Any item that has not circulated since 2005 or before, meaning it has gone at least 20 years without any recorded use, has been selected for potential deselection.
Materials that show significant signs of wear or damage—such as broken bindings, torn pages, water damage, or mold—compromise both the usability of the item and the overall integrity of the collection. Retaining items in poor condition can pose preservation risks to nearby materials and detract from the browsing experience. Items identified as physically unfit for use will be considered for deselection. However, if the content remains relevant and demand persists, efforts will be made to replace the item with a newer edition or a digital equivalent.
Previous editions of works are often replaced by newer versions that incorporate updated research, revised content, and current best practices. In subject areas where information evolves rapidly—such as health sciences, law, and technology—older editions may contain outdated or inaccurate material that could misinform users. To ensure the collection remains current and reliable, superseded editions are typically withdrawn unless they hold demonstrable historical, archival, or scholarly value that justifies their continued inclusion.
Multi-volume works that are missing essential volumes can present significant barriers to use, limiting their research and instructional value. Incomplete sets often lead to user frustration and underutilization, particularly when key volumes are unavailable or out of print. Unless there is a strong likelihood of acquiring the missing components or the remaining volumes have standalone relevance, these sets may be deselected. This approach helps maintain a more coherent and user-friendly collection while optimizing shelf space for materials that are complete, accessible, and more likely to support current needs.
