New York Times: TimesMachine

TimesMachine is a searchable interface of digitized pages of New York Times issues published between 1851 and 2002. Articles published between 1851 and 1980 are available to download as PDF files.

Access

Step 1: If you haven't already, Register for a free New York Times account using your Fredonia email address. 

Step 2: Login to your account of the NYTimes Website. You must be logged into the account affiliated with your Fredonia email to get access through our subscription.

Step 3: Go to the TimesMachine website.

Search the TimesMachine

To search for a specific topic, person, or event in TimesMachine:

  1. Enter your search terms in the search bar. For example, you might search for "Pan-American Exposition Buffalo."
  2. Adjust the date range to narrow your search to a specific period. This can help you find articles published around a particular event, Pan-American Exposition held in Buffalo from May 1 to November 2, 1901. To view articles before or after the exposition, simply adjust the date range accordingly.
  3. For articles published after 2002, please use the main NYTimes website.
  4. Click the thumbnail image to open the article.

Saving & Sharing Articles

  • Download PDF: Using the menu on the left, locate the option to download a PDF version of the article. Note that there's a limit of 5 PDF downloads per day.
  • Email Article Link: Use the options in the left menu to email a link to the article to yourself for later reference.
  • Share Permalink: Use the permalink, a shortened form of the URL, to easily return to the article later, or share with students in FREDLearn. Note: Students will need to log into their own NYTimes account to be able to access the article.
