Frequently Asked Questions: Borrowing

Questions on Borrowing

Q: How can I find books at Reed Library?
A: Use ReedSearch. You can restrict your search to books using the limiters in the left sidebar of your search results.

Q: How can I find books that aren’t in the Library catalog?
A: The WorldCat service searches the holdings of libraries worldwide. If you would like to request an item you've found through WorldCat, simply click the link to request an interlibrary loan (see below).

Q: How do I request a book or article that Reed Library does not own or is missing?
A: Reed Library offers an interlibrary loan (ILL) service, through which we can borrow an item from another library to lend it to you. If you have checked out an item through ILL and want to renew it or check the due date, log in to the Interlibrary Loan page. For more information, see the interlibrary loan page.

Q: How do I check materials out from the Library?
A: You can check materials out at the circulation desk, next to the Library's main entrance. Be aware that while most books, DVDs, CDs, LPs, and scores circulate (that is, you may check them out), reference books and bound periodicals do not. The Library catalog indicates whether an item is circulating or non-circulating.

Q: How do I renew something I have checked out?
A: See our page on renewals for an explanation.

Q: How do I access something on reserve?
A: Reserves are held behind the circulation desk. Simply go to the circulation desk and request the reserve item to check out using your FREDCard. Reserve items check out for either two or three hours, and most are not allowed to leave the Library. (In other words, you will need to stay in the Library while you use them.)

Q: Where are the Library's CDs located?
A: CDs are held in cabinets located on the main floor, along the curved wall leading to the Garden at Reed.  They are in sequential number, as given in the library catalog.  Patrons are welcome to look in the cabinets and find the CD(s) they need.  CDs can be signed-out out at the Circulation Desk using your FREDCard.
