Digital Annotation Tools: Diigo

About Diigo

Diigo is a powerful, free, social bookmarking tool with annotating features.  Social bookmarking allows users to organize, store, and share bookmarks and annotations online. Diigo also allows users to highlight, and add interactive sticky notes to selected web pages that can be retrieved from any computer, any place, anytime.  It also allows the user to add their own tags for easy retrieval later.

Getting Started

Creating an Account

Creating an account with Diigo is free for anyone. Before you can sign up for your educator’s account, you have to sign up for a regular account as anyone else would.

  1. Start by going to Diigo.com
  2. Click the sign up button at the top right corner of the page
  3. Select your plan, free or otherwise
  4. Put in your desired username, password, and email address - use your Fredonia email to qualify for the free educator’s upgrade
  5. Return to Diigo.com to install the Diigo extension for your browser

Educator Accounts

Educators have the option to request a free education edition upgrade, which gives you the following additional features:

  • Create student accounts for an entire class with just a few clicks (student email addresses are optional for account creation)
  • Students of the same class are automatically set up as a Diigo group so they can start using all the benefits that a Diigo group provides, such as group bookmarks and annotations, and group forums.
  • Privacy settings of student accounts are more restricted

Activating Educator Account

After setting up your standard Diigo account, request an educators account by visiting https://www.diigo.com/education and filling out the request form. You will receive an activation email once your account has been approved.

Teacher Console

Once your account has been upgraded to “Educator Account” status, you will gain access to the Teacher Console. You can access the Teacher Console by clicking the drop-down menu located under your username on the top right of the page.

The Teacher Console is used to create and manage class groups and student accounts. Note that accounts created through the normal Diigo sign-up process are NOT student accounts. You must create the student accounts and add them to your class group through the Teacher Console.
