EndNote: Installing EndNote

Installing EndNote

Reed Library offers current students, faculty, and staff access to the full EndNote X8 desktop program.

EndNote is installed in all campus computer labs.

Faculty and staff wishing to install EndNote on their office computers can follow the appropriate guide below:

This page includes instructions on the following:

Installing EndNote on a Personal Windows Computer

1. Access Blue Devil Downloads. Enter your eServices username and password when prompted.

2. Download the EndNote X8 for Windows installer.
If prompted by your web browser, choose to save the file.

3. Right-click the downloaded .zip file and choose "Extract All." Do not simply double-click the file.

4. Follow the prompts to extract the installer from the .zip file.

5. Open the extracted folder, then open the installer: ENX8Inst.exe.

6. Follow the installer's prompts to install EndNote on your system.

After installation, EndNote will be available from your Start Menu.

Now you will need to set up your copy of EndNote and your EndNote account.

Installing EndNote on a Personal Macintosh

1. Access Blue Devil Downloads. Enter your eServices username and password when prompted.

2. Download the EndNote X8 for Mac OS X installer. If prompted by your web browser, choose to save the file.

3. Open the installer disc image from your Downloads folder.

4. In the window that pops up, open the installer application.

5. Follow the installer's prompts to install EndNote on your system.

After installation, EndNote will be available from your Applications folder.

Now you will need to set up your copy of EndNote and your EndNote account.

Starting EndNote, Part 1: Linking Your Account

The first time that you open EndNote, you will be asked to accept the software license agreement. Click the radio button to accept the agreement, and continue.

You will now be prompted to set up an EndNote account. Creating an account allows you to access your citations from anywhere through the EndNote Web interface, or to synchronize your citations between multiple computers.

If you are using a lab computer, you must create an EndNote account to preserve your citations, or they will be deleted when you log off.

Click the button to "Set up your account."

In the window that appears, click Enable Sync.

If you have not set up an EndNote account, click the Sign Up button and follow the process to create your account before proceeding. See the "Creating an Account" section below for more help.

If you have previously set up an EndNote account, enter your email address and password under "EndNote Account Credentials," and click OK.

Then click OK again.

Continue to "Creating a Library File."

Creating an Account

In the EndNote Login window, click Sign Up.

Enter your email address and click Submit.

On the next screen, enter your name and create a password. Then read the license agreement and click I Agree.

When the account confirmation appears, click Done at the bottom of the window.

EndNote will auto-fill the EndNote Preferences pane with your account information. Click OK at the bottom and proceed to create a library file (below).

Starting EndNote, Part 2: Creating a Library File

In order to use EndNote, you must create a library file for it to save your citations.

From the File menu, choose New.

Choose where to save your library file. (A good location is the EndNote folder that's been created in your Documents folder.) Then click Save.

Your new library file will be opened. If you have previously set up an EndNote account, click the Sync button to copy your references from EndNote Web into the library file on your computer.
