EndNote: Creating a Reference

Creating a Reference

EndNote allows you to manually create citations within your library. This is especially useful for items you already have on hand.

This page will show you how to create references for the following types of materials:

Journal Articles

Click the New Reference button in the library toolbar.

If necessary, change the "Reference Type" to "Journal Article."

Enter the citation information. Use the "Last Name, First Name" format for the author(s).

Close the window and confirm that you want to save the reference.

Books

Click the New Reference button in the library toolbar.

Change the "Reference Type" to "Book."

Enter the citation information. Use the "Last Name, First Name" format for the author(s).

Close the window and confirm that you want to save the reference.

Web Pages

Click the New Reference button in the library toolbar.

Change the "Reference Type" to "Web Page."

Enter the citation information. Use the "Last Name, First Name" format for the author(s).

Close the window and confirm that you want to save the reference.

Book Chapters

Click the New Reference button in the library toolbar.

Change the "Reference Type" to "Book Section."

Enter the citation information. Use the "Last Name, First Name" format for the author(s).

Close the window and confirm that you want to save the reference.

Newspaper Articles

Click the New Reference button in the library toolbar.

Change the "Reference Type" to "Newspaper Article."

Enter the citation information. Use the "Last Name, First Name" format for the author(s).

Close the window and confirm that you want to save the reference.
